Let’s not kid ourselves. Getting older is a challenge. And, middle age, well, it involves a whole new level of change.
Hair, make-up and clothing that made you look fantastic in your 20s, often won’t cut it as you get older. The good news is that none of those challenges have to stop you from living an amazingly vibrant and productive life for decades to come. True, there will be more of the good, the bad, and the what’s-up-with-that transformations … but turning 50 is momentous!
A seasoned woman is spicy and have been marinated in life experience. She’s authentic and comfortable in her own skin and committed to continue living fully and passionately. At 57, Dianne Keaton produced her 7th movie and played the girlfriend of 39-year-old heartthrob Keanu Reeves in Something’s Gotta Give. And, at 73 actress Susan Sarandon is still the prototype for the sexy older woman, a title she claimed in her 40s!
However, despite the extra years of wisdom (and beauty), there’s a chance that you’re making some common mistakes when it comes to your health and wellbeing.
You might not be paying enough attention to your heart health. Menopause doesn’t cause cardio-vascular disease but bad habits in the past will catch up with you in your 50s. People in their mid-50s have a 90% chance of high blood pressure, even those who’ve never had problems before. So, it’s crucial to know your numbers for cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar.
You might be skipping exercise and believe that weight gain is inevitable. Tempted to stop working out? (Or maybe use your age as an excuse not to start?) Exercise can relieve pain and stave of health problems in coming years such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease and dementia. If you can manage a marathon, great! If not, now’s the time to check out the gym pool, start taking yoga, or fall in love with power walking.
Maybe you believe that young equals sexy? Don’t buy into that. Although hormonal upheavals often cause vaginal dryness, over-the-counter lubricating products can help with this. People have sex way into their 60s, 70s, and some even in their 80’s! Sex is hugely beneficial to our bodies, minds and spirits, often resulting in improved muscle tone, healthier vaginal tissues and better psychological wellbeing.
Are you accepting menopausal miseries? Get help with menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, sleeping difficulties, and vaginal and urinary problems. Embrace where you are right now.
Maybe you’re focussing on wrinkles and thinning hair and ignoring your teeth. Yellowing teeth can make you look older, but it’s more than just about looks. Dental health is closely linked to overall health and gum disease (which is associated with heart problems). Don’t skip your visits to the dentist.
Remember, getting older is a natural part of life, but it can be quite a beautiful part too.
So ladies, be gentle with yourself as you put your healthy-living knowledge to work whilst looking your absolute best.
